(EC) 8 Privacy Threats Worst Than Google, March 3, 2012, Information Week Security

In this article, it talks about how there are 8 different privacy threats that can have you and your personal information at risk. The first is a “Shoulder Surfer”. This type of threat is when someone has access to looking at your computer screen. This can commonly happen when you are in a public place like a cafĂ© or airport. The second threat is a hacker. Everyone knows the danger that a hacker can cause on your personal information. A strong suggestion to preventing hackers from getting into your information is to create a strong password that only you would know. Other people are also a big risk in personal safety. When you are with a friend or in a relationship most people do not see the harm in sharing their items. All that needs to happen is if one of these people sent something from your device to the public, that information is now accessible. Your employer is also a threat of privacy. If you access your personal information at your job place, chances are that the boss has access to your account. If you are doing things at work you should not be, the boss can easily look and this can damage your sense of privacy. There is no bigger threat to personal privacy than you. Key ways to be sure to keep your own privacy is to trust the right people, password and block things that are important. There have been new privacy details coming out within different programs. This may help you a small portion but the true sense of security is making sure you do not let anything valuable out in the open. These safe steps can guarantee you that you will be safe and secure from things that can potentially harm your personal information. 1. I have never been a victim of an internet privacy threat but it is definitely a fear of mine. One thing I do to help prevent any of my information being stolen is logging out of my accounts every time I use them on any computer other than my own. I have notice that the Nichols website takes their security very seriously by forcing students to make difficult passwords with numbers, letters, and capital letters or symbols. They make it even more difficult be having students change their password about every three months. This is not something that I am used to and it actually kind of annoys me but in the end I know it is for my own good. With all of the things that you can do on the internet these days, such as shopping and banking, it is important to make sure you are taking the right actions towards keeping your information secure.

  2. Security on the internet is one of the easiest things in the world. And yet so many people fall victim to hackers. Honestly the easiest way to not become a victim is to know what your doing. Don't click on pop ups and avoid suspicious sites. I tend to avoid sites I don't know and yet I still occasionally get viruses. When it comes to internet security and privacy in general I have found that it's up to us to keep ourselves safe.
