“Why Pinterest is 2012’s hottest website”
Pete Cashmore, Tuesday February7th, 2010 CNN

Since the rise of social networking success, due to Facebook, twitter and others, more and more sites have been taking over the web that speaks many people’s interests. Pinterest surfaced the web around two years ago. Starting off with almost no notice, it has finally begun to take off. Pinterest targets mostly women, who can “pin” items they discover on the web. As this article describes, the sit grew 400% from September to December 2011. Not only is this website easy to use, but it is very visual. It is organized by various topics and that can be shared. Pete Cashmore states, “Pinterest checks all the boxes: It’s a visual social network that organizes images by topic and lets you reshare them with just one click”.  Due to the success it has had so far, it will increase even more over time, and I predict will soon be competing with the same success as twitter, and Facebook.  On the website, Pinterest describes what people can do with this virtual pin board. Some ideas include: redecorating homes, planning a wedding, finding a style, saving inspirations, saving recipes and more.  The overall goal is to connect people in the world through things that they are interested in.  New pins are added every week, linking millions of people with others who share common interests.  Another feature about pinterest that I find helpful, is it shows step by step on the website how people can use it in various ways. For example, there is an app for it on iPhones, and it can also show people how to follow others on interest.  Since we discuss a lot of technological advances in class, I believe that interest will be another step up in technology, and can virtually help people organize things they have a high interest in.  Being a user of Pinterest myself, I can speak highly of this website, because it has been able to help me find idea’s with fashion and recipes. There is someone for everyone on this website, and though it’s mostly targeted to the female gender, I believe men can find things as well. I also predict that within the next year, it will be equally balanced for female, and males, and will continue to grow into a larger success.

  1. I think Pinterest is a very interesting website. I first heard about it through Cosmo and quickly decided to request to create one. I have to admit I’ve only visited the site a few times. This is probably due to the fact that I know I’ll become addicted to it and it will swallow up all of my time. I think that it’s crazy how popular the site has become in only a few months. I also agree that although it is currently attracting mostly women that it will soon change. I think that it’s a very smart concept for a website which is what makes it so popular. After realizing how popular the site is becoming it has caused me to be even more eager to explore the site and see what it’s all about.

  2. Tori I love that we both have opinions about Pinterest. Along with Sam. I forgot that you had to be invited in order to get one. I know what I would put on it once I get my own. It will have a wedding section, because I am obsessed, it will also have a fashion, food, and sports section. I want to see yours Tori and all my other friends that have one. I truly do think that before the summer almost all the people that have a facebook and twitter will stop using those and get a Pinterest. I know it has all the same qualities as those sites so I think it is going to put facebook and twitter in the shadows. I do wonder of course if Pinterest has an app on the iphones. This I will have to look into. I can’t wait to see what happens in the future with Pinterest and all the other cites that are competing together.
