In a article written by Jacqui
Cheng, Ars Technica he states that
years after investing Facebook and its policy for deleted photos and the fact
they are still present on the web if the direct link is accessible. Even though
on Facebook the desired photos that wish to be deleted are removed from the
users profile. The users of Facebook wish to delete photos for various reasons,
either to clean up there page for work purposes, or photos that were posted
without their consent and also photos that display inappropriate behavior.
Facebook horror stories were shared with Cheng in order to alert Facebook about
the users concerns with the so-called deleted photos. Cheng brought this to the
attention to Facebook and they replied that they are working on this feature and
that this problem would soon be solved, the issue was presented in 2009 and
still nothing has been done. Still in 2012 he informs us that nothing has been
done. He contacted a spokes person by the name of Frederic Wolens via
email and in response he explained that the photos that remained online were
stuck in a legacy system that apparently never works properly and that they are
currently working toward fixing.
My
reaction to this news brought about by Facebook is alarming. As a Facebook user
I believed that once a photo was deleted it was gone. I was unaware that the
photo could be viewed elsewhere. As a business student our professors remind us
and warn us about the activity done on our profiles. I believe that Facebook
should take action in fixing these issues to please their customers and users
because some of the material and photos posted may be harassment and embarrassing
to the people who wish to delete the photos. Hopefully Facebook will fix this
issue in time, but not too much time.
