Mike Schiavone. Blog #1

My name is Michael Schiavone. I am from Chicago, Illinois. I am a freshman here at Nichols College and I am on the hockey team.  Although I am a freshman, I am older than most of the students in the class because I played two years of Junior A hockey after I graduated high school. I spent two years in Northern Ontario just playing hockey and “living the dream.” I have been playing hockey since I was 5 years old and it is my life. I am the middle of five kids and my dad and older brother also played hockey.  I also have an older sister, a younger sister, who is in eighth grade and a younger brother, who is also in college. My older brother and sister both graduated from college and have jobs in business related fields. My major right now is business and I intend on going into finance and maybe double majoring in something else that I take interest in.
Upon the completion of this course I hope to have learned more about the technology in my everyday life and how to use it more efficiently.  There is a lot about computer and the internet that I don’t know about, blogging being one example of this. Maybe by the time this course is over I will even be blogging regularly. Another thing that would be helpful in the future to learn about is PowerPoint.
Being from Chicago, I am a huge Blackhawks fan. When they won the Stanley Cup in 2010, it was a moment that I will always remember and cherish.  Besides attending as many games as I can during the season, I also go to the prospect camp over the summer to watch all the Blackhawks drafted players and some free agents play scrimmage games hoping to make it to the main camp tryouts and preseason games. This is where I first saw Andrew Shaw play. He was not a top draft pick nor was he well known but the way he was playing caught my attention and likely anyone else’s that camp. Although he did not make it to the main camp and was sent down to the minor league team, in my opinion, he was the best player on the ice. It did not take long, for him to make a name for himself in the minor leagues and get called up to the Blackhawks where he scored five goals in his first eight NHL appearances. When he first got called up everyone was asking, “Who is Andrew Shaw?” Now he is a fan favorite and even has a trending hash tag on twitter called #ShawFacts.  All I can say is I am not surprised. 1. Hey Mike, I love how you did the article that interests you on Andrew Shaw. All of the twitter comments (#ShawFacts) made me laugh. My favorite #ShawFact is, "Andrew Shaw puts Peggy on hold." Also its fun to read about smaller market players in the NHL and the impact that they have on the team. Hopefully Shaw will be in Chicago for a long time coming. It's good to have young gritty players on a team and gives the hawks a much needed edge since the season ending injury of Dan Carcillo. It was also good to read how much you enjoy being in Chicago like myself, and how Nichols doesn't compare. We will definitely have fun when school ends watching the Hawks winning the Cup, but at home this year! Then when it comes to what you wish to learn this year in class I agree with what you said, but I dont think that I will be doing any blogging in my spare time once the school year is over. I cant wait to get back to the windy city with you this summer. Go Hawks!

  2. Hi Mike I also play hockey and started at a young age to, I have been playing since I was 3. I’m also a fan of the Blackhawks my favorite player is Jonathan Toews. I think that’s cool that your went to Canada to play juniors I’ve been to Canada a couple of times and loved it every time I’ve been. I also hope to get a better understanding of technology, because I had a hard time learning how to blog. That’s cool that you went to a camp and could have been drafted to the minors and possibly up to play for the Blackhawks. That’s also cool that you know a kid who was drafted up to the NHL, and is a crowd favorite. I had a friend in high school that went to play and practice over the summer with the ducks, because he is from California. Good luck with hockey.
